British Home Child George William Barrett was born 7 September 1891 in St. Pancras, London, England, son of Hannah Hoitt and George Barrett.  Brother of British Home Child Daisy Emma Barrett.  Private Barrett arrived in 1899 aboard the 'Lake Huron' with Barnardo Homes.  He was a Hired Man in the household of Bagetta and George J Porte in Provencher, Manitoba and then a Domestic Servant in the household of Elenor and Albert Pastick in Ste Agathe Parish, Provencher, Manitoba.

1906 Manitoba Census records note that George W Barrett was a Hired Man in the household of Bagetta and George J Porte in Provencher, Manitoba.  George was 20 years of age and came from England in 1899.

1911 Canadian Census records note that George Barrett was a Domestic in the household of Elenor and Albert Pastick in Ste Agathe Parish, Provencher, Manitoba.  George was 22 years of age, born in Apr 1889 and having immigrated in ... Might read 1909, the image is  difficult to make out.

Attestation papers were signed 30 Dec 1915 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  George William Barrett was born in London, England on 6 Apr 1899 - A correction is made to change the year to 1889.  He was a Farmer by trade in Elfrost, Saskatchewan, Canada.  His Next of Kin was his Father, James Barrett of London, England.  Name and address crossed out with 'Particulars not known'.  Sister, Mrs. Florence Layliss (bayliss) is added from 284 Carny Avenue, Karney, New Jersey, USA.  5' 5 3/4" in height with blue eyes and brown hair.  His religion was noted as Church of England.

His Military file confirms his wife's name as Maude Barrett, living at Pindro Square, Church Street, Seaford, Sussex in his Will.  George's father is noted as 'James', but earlier records show his father's name was also George.  Burial records also indicate he was the son of George Barrett.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers and Circumstances of Casualty states that he was previously reported Wounded and Missing, and had been Killed in Action at Lens, Hill 70, Nord Pas de Calais, France.  His Next of Kin was Mrs. M. L. Barrett of No 1. Pendrie Square, Church Street, Seaford, Sussex, England.  This was changed by 1936 to his Widow, Mrs Maude Barrett of 470 West William Street, Portchester, New York, USA.
